The movies and books we'd give as gifts

"Stick to tech," you might be thinking right now. Well, in a way, we are. No, we're not pop culture critics, and hardcover books aren't gadgets. But our gift guide wouldn't be complete without some DVD (OK, fine, Blu-ray) recs, and what is our taste if not nerdy? Because we're Engadget, and covering tech is what we do, we curated a list of books and movies that fall squarely in the sci-fi, gaming, nerd-culture and dystopia buckets. Or, in the case of nonfiction books like Super Pumped, we included media that chronicles and interrogates the tech industry -- for better and worse. Looking for something not too expensive with a bit more warmth than, we don't know, a battery pack? A book or movie relevant to your geeky friend's interests could be just the thing.

  • Blu-ray movie releases for the week of Nov. 20

We're not entirely sure, but we think there are a few other Blu-ray movie releases this week that don't have "Die Hard" somewhere in their title. Seriously, this is like the greatest day ever for die-hard fans of Die Hard. (See what we did there?) Live Free or Die Hard The Die Hard Collection Hairspray The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause David Gilmour: Remember That Night Badder Santa: Unrated Die Hard Die Hard with a Vengeance Die Hard 2: Die Harder Pathfinder: Unrated Even if you're somehow not a fan of John McClane, there's not really much left over unless you like to see a foul-mouthed Santa, John Travolta in drag or even more exploitation of the poor, unfortunate Native Americans. Yippie ki-yay!

  • Live Free or Die Hard DVD to also include downloadable version

Although we had heard that "another studio" would be mimicking the approach taken by Warner Home Video on the forthcoming Harry Potter DVD, now we're learning the who, what and when. Apparently, 20th Century Fox will be including an "electronic copy of the complete movie [that's Live Free or Die Hard, for those wondering] that can be played on a computer and select portable video players." This could debatably be seen as an "industry first" considering the November 20th release date (compared to Potter's December 11th), and while the Digital Copy system is expected to hit future Fox DVDs, we've no idea what those titles will be just yet. Furthermore, it's stated that the feature is "DRM-free," but after entering a 16-digit serial code found within the case, users can only "transfer the movie file to Windows-based computers or PMPs equipped with Microsoft Windows' PlaysForSure feature." Gotta love those limitations, eh?

  • Fox sets release dates, specs for Fantastic Four 2 & Die Hard 4

Last year Fox made a major splash in the Blu-ray market with its lineup of feature-laden titles, now its announced more details on the special features to expect on Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Live Free or Die Hard. Both of these MPEG-4 encoded flicks will release on 50GB dual-layer discs with DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio soundtracks, D-Box motion support and BD-J powered strategy games. What isn't there, is any kind of BD-Live internet functionality, but it looks like we'll be waiting to take our Blu-ray discs and players online just a bit longer. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is due October 2, while the fourth Die Hard will release November 20th, alongside the Blu-ray box set of the first three movies in the series.

  • Today's most retro action game: Die Hard (NES)

The new Die Hard is set to bust blocks this summer, and the Angry Video Game Nerd looks back at the NES game based on the original movie. We're partial to his trailer versus his full review of the game. (The full video has a few amusing jokes, but the fast editing of the trailer wins us over.) It's even funny if you don't think swearing is hilarious -- although if you do, there's no reason not to watch.See the NSFW (for language) video trailer after the break.
